How to Release Music Without a Record Deal As An Independent Artist

The music industry has changed so much over the years. Once upon a time, if you wanted to “make it,” you needed a record deal. The big three — Sony, Warner and Universal — controlled almost everything. Smaller labels were out there too, but most artists felt like they had no choice but to sign their life away just to be heard.

But things are different now. With the rise of streaming, digital platforms and social media, independent artists like me can release music directly to the world — no middleman required.

TL;DR

Independent artists can now release music without a record deal. I do it all myself: work with musicians, record locally, create my own content. The catch? You need a marketing plan and promotion budget, or your music disappears. The independent path gives you ownership and freedom.

The Changing Music Industry & Life as an Independent Artist

Why I Choose to Release Myself

I’m proud to be an independent artist. It means I own my work, I choose who I collaborate with, and I get to connect directly with you — the listeners — without layers of contracts or corporate red tape.

Over the last year I’ve been working with some amazing musicians and producers.

The process is beautifully simple:

  1. 🎵 I receive a track or backing music from a musician I trust.
  2. ✍️ I write the lyrics and shape the song.
  3. 🎤 I record my vocals at my local studio — Airtight Recording Studio in Chorlton, Manchester (shout out to them, they’re brilliant).
  4. 🎨 I come home, create the artwork and content myself.

From start to finish, it’s DIY — and I love that freedom.

The Reality of being an independent artist: Marketing Matters

Here’s the bit most people don’t talk about: creating music is only half the journey. The other half is marketing.

It’s so common in the industry to spend all your budget on recording, mixing and mastering — and then have nothing left for promotion. But without a content strategy plan, even the best track can disappear into the noise.

No budget, no strategy, no audience growth. That’s the trap so many artists fall into.

I sell my albums via my website and offer digital albums as well as physical/hard copy CDs.

What I’ve Learned about releasing singles and albums

Every single or album release needs:

  • A marketing plan (how you’ll reach new ears).
  • A content strategy (how you’ll share your story).
  • A little budget set aside for promotion — even if it’s small.

It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it does have to be consistent. The music industry isn’t just about making songs anymore, it’s about building a community.

The Future of Music

The industry is still changing, but one thing’s for sure — independent artists have more power than ever. We can write, record, release and connect directly with the people who resonate with our music. That’s freedom.

And while I’ll always love performing live, teaching about frequencies and sharing music face-to-face, I also love that through digital platforms, I can reach someone halfway across the world with a single track.

The big labels still exist, but the independent path is wide open  and I’m walking it proudly.

FAQ – How to Release Music Without a Record Deal As An Independent Artist

Do I need a record deal to release music?

No. You can release music independently through digital distribution platforms that get your tracks on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming services. You keep ownership of your work and connect directly with your audience.

How much does it cost to release music independently?

Costs vary based on your approach. Studio recording, mixing and mastering are your main expenses, but you also need budget for artwork, distribution fees and promotion. Many artists make the mistake of spending everything on production and having nothing left for marketing.

What’s the biggest mistake independent artists make?

Releasing music without a marketing plan. You can have an incredible song but if nobody knows it exists, it won’t reach the people who’d love it. Budget and strategy for promotion matter just as much as the quality of your recording.

How do independent artists make money?

Through streaming royalties, digital sales, live performances, merchandise, sync licensing and direct fan support. Owning your catalog means you keep more of what you earn instead of splitting it with a label.

Do I need to be on social media to succeed as an independent artist?

Social media helps you build community and share your story, but it’s one tool in a bigger strategy. You need consistent content that connects with your audience, whether that’s through social platforms, email newsletters, or your website. Pick what works for you and show up regularly.
