Why Supporting Independent Musicians Matters (More Than You Think)

Ever wondered what actually happens when you stream an independent artist’s song on Spotify?

You might think every play helps, but the truth is, unless a track gets over 1,000 streams per year, it earns absolutely nothing. Zilch. Not even a penny.

Let’s dive into this and speak some truth…

Why supporting independent musicians matters more than you think - Blog by Elyse G. Rogers

The big deception of today’s music industry for independent artists

For many of us artists who write, record, produce, promote and perform all our own work, that hurts. Because the music doesn’t just cost us time, money and energy… it costs us a part of our soul.

As an artist who still tours the world with my 90s Eurodance group MAXX, I’ve seen both sides of the music industry.

One weekend I’m on stage in front of thousands, reliving the anthems of a generation and the next, I’m back in my local recording studio, creating guided meditations and healing music tuned to frequencies like 432 Hz and the 9 Solfeggio frequencies.

It’s a wild balance and I wouldn’t change it for the world. But I’d be lying if I said it’s always been easy.

Over the years, I’ve poured countless hours and more money than I care to admit into my music career.

Studio sessions, music production, design work, travel, learning new tech, paying collaborators, making merch… all self-funded. All from the heart.

And truthfully? Looking back, I’d probably have done a few things differently. Built a stronger team earlier. Gotten more support. Surrounded myself with people who understood the business side of being an artist, not just the creative side.

But then again… it’s all led me here.

And here is a place where I get to blend my love of 90s dance with my passion for healing. Where I can sing to crowds one day, and help someone fall asleep peacefully the next. Where music becomes medicine.

What I’m building now isn’t just a music career, it’s a movement.

A movement of sound. Of healing. Of reconnection.

And it’s something only independent artists like me are free to create.

So if you’ve just found me through a MAXX show, or stumbled across one of my tracks on Spotify, or a friend sent you a meditation, know this:

You’re part of a growing circle of people choosing music that feels different.

Because it is.
