I’ve been fascinated by the relationship between animals and sound for years. As a musician, as a sound healer, and as someone who has watched animals respond to healing frequency in ways that never fail to move me, I’ve come to believe we’re only just beginning to understand what our animals are telling us about the power of sound.
Let’s start with the frequency basics, because they are extraordinary.
The human hearing range sits between roughly 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. By the time we reach adulthood, our upper range has typically dropped to around 15,000–16,000 Hz. We think of this as normal. For the animal kingdom, it is remarkably limited.
Dogs hear up to 65,000 Hz
That’s more than three times our upper range. They can detect sounds at four times the distance of a human, and their ears can rotate independently to pinpoint the exact source of a sound.
Cats hear up to 79,000 Hz
Among the broadest hearing ranges of any mammal, they can detect the ultrasonic vocalisations of their prey with extraordinary precision.
Horses have a hearing range of 55–33,500 Hz
They have highly mobile ears that can rotate 180 degrees. They are acutely sensitive to low-frequency sound and infrasound — vibrations below the human hearing threshold entirely.
Birds hear differently from mammals altogether
Their hearing is extraordinarily precise in the mid-frequency ranges critical for song recognition, and some species can detect sounds humans cannot perceive at all.
What this means, practically, is that your pet is living in a vastly richer sonic world than you are.
The music playing in your home, the frequencies in the air, the vibration of the floor beneath them — all of it is being received and processed by a nervous system built for sensitivity.

Of all the remarkable things sound science has revealed, the cat’s purr might be my favourite.
A domestic cat purrs at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz. This is not a coincidence of anatomy. It is, the research suggests, a built-in healing mechanism — for the cat, and remarkably, for us too.
Studies have found that frequencies in the 25–50 Hz range promote bone density and healing.
The 100 Hz range has been linked to pain relief. Exposure to frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz has been associated with reduced blood pressure, lower heart rate and decreased cortisol levels in humans.
Spending time with a purring cat — particularly with the cat resting on or near your body — means your cells are being bathed in a natural frequency that science associates with healing and repair.
Cat owners have long reported that their cats seem to know when they are unwell, gravitating towards areas of the body that are in pain or under stress.
The science of cymatics helps explain what is happening: the cat is doing what healing frequency does — organising, coherencing, supporting repair in the medium it is passing through. Which happens to be you.
We didn’t know this when we first domesticated cats. But perhaps some part of us did.

How Sound Affects Our Pets

Dogs and music
A friend of mine who worked as a dog sitter would always leave the radio on when she had to head out, instinctively knowing her dogs needed company in sound. She was onto something. The science now tells us it matters enormously what that radio is actually playing.
A landmark series of studies by animal psychologist Dr. Deborah Wells found that dogs in rescue kennels showed measurably different behaviour depending on the type of music playing. Heavy metal music increased body shaking and barking.
Pop music produced no significant change. But classical music — and specifically music with slower tempos and simpler harmonic structures — produced significantly calmer behaviour: more time resting, less vocalising, less signs of stress.
Subsequent research has refined this further, finding that certain frequencies and tempos are particularly effective at reducing anxiety in dogs.
Dogs with separation anxiety, noise phobia (particularly around fireworks and thunderstorms) and general stress responses have all shown improvement with targeted sound therapy. This is not anecdotal, it’s replicated, peer-reviewed science.

Birdsong operates predominantly in the frequency ranges that the human nervous system finds most restorative: roughly 1,000–8,000 Hz, with melodic patterns that engage the brain’s pattern-recognition systems without overwhelming them. This frequency range is the one human hearing is most sensitive to, and that’s the most associated with alertness, clarity and positive mood.
Research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that birdsong produced significant improvements in mental wellbeing, reduced anxiety and decreased paranoia in participants — effects that persisted for hours after the listening experience.
A landmark study tracking over 1,200 people across multiple countries found that exposure to birds and birdsong was associated with significant improvements in mental wellbeing, reductions in depression, anxiety and stress, with effects lasting several hours after the experience.
Remarkably, these benefits were found regardless of other environmental factors, suggesting it is the birdsong specifically, not just being outdoors, that is doing the work.
A 2022 study found that even recorded birdsong, played through speakers, produced measurable reductions in stress and improvements in mood.
There is something else going on too, something the frequency science I work with helps to explain.
Birdsong is produced by creatures that are, in a very real sense, monitoring and responding to the health of the environment.
Acoustic ecologists call this the biophony, sounds made by living organisms, as opposed to the geophony, sounds made by the non-biological natural world.
When birds sing freely, abundantly and with variety, it is a signal: this environment is safe. This environment supports life. The nervous system hears this signal — not consciously, but at the level of the oldest, deepest part of the brain — and responds accordingly. Safety. Rest. Restoration.

Low, slow, melodic speech — the kind you probably already use with your pets without thinking — is deeply calming for their nervous systems. Humming and gentle toning near an anxious animal can work quickly. You are a frequency instrument. Use yourself accordingly.
During fireworks and thunderstorms.
This is when sound therapy can make the most immediate difference for dogs and cats. Start playing calming, low-frequency music before the event begins — before the anxiety peaks. It is much easier to maintain a calm state than to recover from a stressed one.
Spend time in nature — with your pet if you can.
