The People Around You Can Make or Break Your Music Career (Here’s What I’ve Learned)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in over 40 years of being in the music biz, it’s that the people around you can either lift you up… or quietly hold you back.

Not everyone clapping for you is truly rooting for you.

And not everyone in your inner circle deserves a front row seat.

This might sound harsh, but it’s true. Especially for independent artists and creatives, your support system isn’t just emotional… it’s essential.

Grab a drink and let’s have a heart-to-heart conversation.

Surround yourself with people who want to see you win

I’ve been in relationships before where I felt like I had to shrink myself.

Where my gigs were tolerated, not celebrated. Where there was love, but not full, soul-deep support. And I see the difference now more than ever.

Because today, I’m in a marriage that is sacred. My husband of 17 years is not just my partner, he’s my greatest supporter. And I don’t say that lightly.

He shows it in the little things:

🧳 When I’ve got a Saturday night gig in Europe, he gives me space midweek to start packing my little rucksack (yes, with all the zipped pockets — tissues, mirror, earplugs, mints, Euros… you know the drill).
💅 He drives me to my hair, nail and spray tan appointments, patiently waiting outside like a proper gent.
✈️ He drops me at the airport, carries my suitcase and always sends a “have a great show” message just before I go on stage.
🛁 When I return, he gives me space, helps me unpack, runs a bath, lets me rest and sleep in the next day without a word.

It’s love in action. It’s quiet, constant support. It’s sacred.

Now, I feel supported… But it hasn’t always been like that…

Facing people’s judgment as an artist

In the past, I didn’t get that. Not from partners, and often not even from certain friends or family. There was a lack of understanding, a subtle judgment, or just emotional absence. They didn’t see what I do as work, or understand how much energy it takes to be “on” in front of crowds, travelling alone, showing up as a light for others.

But now… things are different.

I’ve drawn some very clear lines in my life.
The fair-weather friends are gone.
The family I used to walk on eggshells around? Gone too.
No drama. Just distance. Peaceful. Empowered.

Because I get to choose now.

And I choose love. I choose kindness. I choose people who get me, all of me.

People who love the man I’ve chosen, and the music I’ve made.
If they don’t? Then we lovingly part ways.

I’ve got no time for low-vibe conversations, sneaky competition or energy drainers.

These days I’m surrounding myself with creative souls, uplifting chats and plenty of laughter.

How to surround yourself with people who get you

If you’re on your own creative path, whether it’s music, art, writing or building a conscious business — take a look at who’s around you.

Ask yourself:

  • Do they celebrate your growth, or quietly compete with it?
  • Do they give you space to shine, or dim the lights a little?
  • Do they respect your process, or try to change you?
  • Do they love you for who you really are?

If not… run for the hills.

Seriously. Your energy is sacred, your vision is precious and your people matter.

I’m sharing this because I know how many artists suffer in silence with unsupportive circles. But you don’t have to.

You’re allowed to build a life that supports your mission and protects your heart.

And if no one has told you this lately, you’re worth that level of love.
No questions. No compromise.
